Fresh global tracking data shows the private "Unicorn Board" expanding rapidly, heavily dominated by deep tech and specialized AI labs. The world now hosts a record 1,603 unicorns with a combined valuation of $8 trillion, up 43% from the previous year, with the AI sector alone accounting for 36% of total unicorn value.
The Latest News
China-based AI lab DeepSeek made headlines with a massive $7.4 billion Series A round at a $50 billion valuation—the largest private AI financing in Chinese history. The round, which closed in mid-June, was structured to preserve founder control. Just weeks later, DeepSeek is already planning a fresh fundraising round at a valuation of about $74 billion ahead of a potential IPO on Shanghai's STAR Market. Founder Liang Wenfeng, who had largely bankrolled the company using his quantitative hedge fund before accepting outside capital, has become the world's richest AI founder. DeepSeek's annualized revenue has reached $400–500 million, doubling its 2025 run rate. The company is developing its own AI inference chip to reduce reliance on Nvidia and Huawei and plans to at least double staff across all departments.
Brain-inspired computing startup Flourish reached a multi-billion valuation with a $500 million Series B round at a $2.5 billion valuation. Backed by Jeff Bezos, Lux Capital, GV (Alphabet's venture arm), and Catalio Capital, Flourish is developing Cortex AI—a system designed to mimic brain function by mapping real neurons and their connections in a field known as connectomics. The system aims to run complex AI operations on just 20 to 50 watts of energy. The company, co-founded by former Internet Explorer creator Thomas Reardon and ex-Amazon executive Rob Williams, will use the funds to build an in-house neuroscience lab equipped with high-resolution electron microscopes.
Sector Trend
Modern unicorns are no longer basic delivery or social media apps. Venture capital is heavily concentrating capital into deep engineering platforms—specifically semiconductor acceleration, spatial AI, sovereign defense technology, and embedded financial infrastructure. The AI sector now numbers 215 unicorns—up 87 in a single year—and accounts for 36% of total unicorn value. Defense tech has also emerged as a dominant category: Helsing raised $1.8 billion at an $18 billion valuation, Anduril Industries is valued at $61 billion, and Kraken Technology Group achieved unicorn status with a $175 million Series B at a $1 billion valuation.
The Bottom Line
July 2026 confirms that the unicorn ecosystem has fundamentally shifted toward deep engineering and specialized infrastructure. DeepSeek's $50 billion valuation and Flourish's brain-inspired computing bet demonstrate that investors are placing massive bets on next-generation AI architectures—whether through cost-efficient frontier models or radical hardware efficiency. The era of consumer app unicorns is fading. The era of deep-tech, sovereign AI, and infrastructure-first private titans is already here.
