Konwert India Motors Raises Pre-Series A to Scale Electric Retrofits for Auto-Rickshaws
1. What Happened?
Konwert India Motors Pvt. Ltd., an electric mobility company based in Coimbatore, has raised a pre-Series A round led by The Chennai Angels (TCA), according to an announcement dated 23 October 2026. Existing investors Campus Angels Network, Keiretsu Forum Chennai and Native Angel Network also took part. The company converts petrol, CNG and LPG auto-rickshaws into electric vehicles rather than selling new ones, and says it will use the money to grow sales, add products and enter new markets in India and abroad.
The announcement does not state how much was raised. Figures for the round that appear elsewhere have not been verified against the release or a regulatory filing, so this article does not use them.
2. What Does the Source Say?
The primary source is a press release issued by the company and distributed by the news agency ANI on 23 October. It confirms the following, all of which are the company's own claims:
- Konwert was founded in Coimbatore in 2019 by Nickendra Manikandan and makes electric powertrains with magnet-free motors.
- A patented process completes a conversion in 90 minutes, at roughly half the price of a new electric auto-rickshaw.
- A converted vehicle gets up to 213 km of range on a 10 kWh battery, and drivers save about ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 a month on fuel, which the company says is about a quarter of a typical driver's income.
- Converted vehicles can be serviced at about 800 myTVS touchpoints across India, and drivers can finance the conversion through four lending partners.
- Konwert operates in India and Sri Lanka and is developing retrofit solutions for light commercial vehicles.
Deepak Reddy of The Chennai Angels said electrifying transport is central to India's path to energy independence and that Konwert is well placed to contribute.
3. What Is Still Unknown?
- Round size and valuation. Neither was disclosed in the announcement.
- Conversion price in rupees: The release says "about half" the cost of a new electric three-wheeler but gives no figure.
- Certification status: The release does not say which approvals or homologation the retrofit kit holds.
- Battery warranty and durability: No details on cycle life, warranty or replacement cost.
- Scale to date: The release does not say how many vehicles have been converted.
- Independent verification: The 90-minute, 213 km and fuel-saving figures come from the company and have not been tested by a third party in the sources reviewed.
- Lending partners: The four lenders are not named.

4. Why Does It Matter?
More than 30 crore vehicles run on India's roads, and most burn petrol or diesel, according to Autocar Pro. Policy attention has focused on new electric vehicles, which leaves the existing fleet largely untouched. Auto-rickshaws are a particularly price-sensitive segment, because owner-drivers earn modest incomes and a new electric three-wheeler is often out of reach.
Retrofit is one answer to that gap. Konwert is not alone: another retrofit company, Folks Motor, quotes ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh to convert a three-wheeler or small commercial vehicle, according to the same Autocar Pro report, though that is a different company and not Konwert's price. The funding round also lands in a tight market for early-stage capital: Tracxn found that seed funding for Indian tech startups fell 37% to $698 million in the first nine months of 2026.
5. Our Analysis
This is Metaplugs' interpretation, and it rests on assumptions we label as such.
The business case looks like a financing story:
If the company's savings claim holds, a driver's monthly fuel saving is large relative to income, which makes the conversion price and loan terms the deciding factors. The release mentions four lending partners but not their rates or tenures. Assumption: drivers will adopt only if monthly loan payments sit comfortably below the claimed fuel savings.

The round is probably a working-capital step, not a scale-up:
Pre-Series A rounds led by angel networks are typically small compared with later stages. Because the amount is undisclosed, we cannot say whether it can fund a manufacturing expansion. This is an assumption about the stage, not a finding about Konwert.

Quality and certification will be the test:
A competitor, Folks Motor, says the Automotive Research Association of India handles design and validation of its retrofit platform. Konwert's release says nothing equivalent. That does not mean its kit is uncertified, only that readers cannot check it from the announcement.
