Airbus Anchor-Invests in €500M E2D European Defense Technology Fund
Live from the Farnborough International Airshow, Airbus Defence and Space signed on as the anchor investor in the new €500 million E2D dual-use and defense tech growth fund. Launched in June 2026 by venture capital firms AVP and Earlybird, the Franco-German initiative provides growth capital to European deep-tech companies across space, air, land, maritime, and subsurface domains. The fund targets approximately 20 growth-stage companies with an average investment of €25 million each, backing businesses developing both defense-specific and dual-use capabilities.

E2D has also announced its first investment in French defense technology company Alta Ares, which builds AI-powered intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and counter-drone systems. The investment follows a recently signed memorandum of understanding between Airbus Defence and Space and Alta Ares to co-develop and integrate next-generation European counter-UAS capabilities into Airbus's battle management suite. Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, framed the initiative in strategic terms: "European defence faces a reality that demands scale and speed; we must actively build and expand a future technology ecosystem of suppliers and partners. The investment in E2D adds to our internal and direct M&A initiatives to drive cutting-edge European technology, while keeping capital, talent and essential intellectual property on the continent".

Sovereign nations are shortening the cycle between private startup engineering and military adoption. Unmanned aerial defense and automated counter-drone systems are being deployed to protect critical civilian and military infrastructure continuously. Roland Manger, Co-Founder of Earlybird, noted that "Airbus's commitment as anchor LP brings E2D closer to the operators and industrial primes our portfolio companies need to scale. Alta Ares is exactly the kind of business we set out to support: agile, mission-focused, and already delivering for European armed forces". Benoit Fosseprez, General Partner at AVP, added that "Alta Ares's rapid progress from the battlefield to the boardroom is precisely the kind of European deep tech story we want to invest in".

July 2026 marks a decisive shift in European defense financing and startup integration. The €500 million E2D fund—anchored by Airbus and backed by Franco-German venture capital—represents a significant commitment to scaling dual-use and defense technologies across the continent. The inaugural investment in Alta Ares signals that European industrial leaders are ready to back growth-stage companies that can close critical capability gaps. The era of fragmented, slow-moving defense procurement is ending. The era of integrated, venture-backed defense innovation—shortening the cycle from startup engineering to military adoption—is already here.
