Airbus Anchors €500M Fund for Sovereign Counter-Drone Networks
Live from the Farnborough International Airshow on July 21, Airbus Defence and Space signed an agreement to become the anchor investor in the new €500 million E2D dual-use and defence technology growth fund. Launched in June 2026 by venture capital firms AVP and Earlybird, the fund represents one of the most significant Franco-German investment collaborations in the European technology sector. Targeting approximately 20 growth-stage companies with an average investment size of €25 million, E2D will focus on critical domains including space, air, land, maritime, and subsurface systems, backing businesses developing both defence-specific and dual-use capabilities. The fund will concentrate on technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, advanced sensing, cybersecurity, and other deep-tech fields supporting future military and commercial applications.

E2D has also announced its first investment in French-headquartered Alta Ares, a company developing AI-powered hardware and agnostic software for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS) missions. The investment follows a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between Airbus Defence and Space and Alta Ares to co-develop and integrate next-generation European counter-drone solutions into Airbus's battle management suite. Alta Ares's counter-drone systems have been operationally deployed in Ukraine since 2024, and the company's U680 Bird of Prey interceptor completed its first demonstration flight on March 30, 2026. "Alta Ares is exactly the kind of business we set out to support: agile, mission-focused, and already delivering for European armed forces," said Roland Manger, Co-Founder of Earlybird. "Alta Ares's rapid progress from the battlefield to the boardroom is precisely the kind of European deep tech story we want to invest in," added Benoit Fosseprez, General Partner at AVP.

Sovereign defense is prioritizing speed and software adaptability. Militaries are deploying uncrewed aerial surveillance and autonomous electronic counter-measure grids that actively detect and neutralize unauthorized drone swarms around critical infrastructure in real time. "European defence faces a reality requiring scale and speed; therefore, we must actively build and expand a future tech ecosystem of suppliers and partners," said Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. July 2026 marks a decisive shift in European defense financing and startup integration. The €500 million E2D fund—anchored by Airbus and backed by Franco-German venture capital—represents a significant commitment to scaling dual-use and defense technologies across the continent. The era of fragmented, slow-moving defense procurement is ending. The era of integrated, venture-backed defense innovation—shortening the cycle from startup engineering to military adoption—is already here.
