CNBC and Statista have officially published their 2026 global ranking of the world's top financial technology companies, evaluating over 3,500 fintech firms across more than 25,000 data points before selecting 500 companies headquartered across 55 countries and territories. The annual list, now in its fourth edition, recognizes companies across eight segments: payments, neobanking, alternative financing, wealth technology, digital assets, enterprise fintech, insurtech, and regtech.
The report highlights a fintech industry entering a "maturity phase," where scale, profitability, open-banking APIs, and multi-currency stablecoin rails define global success. Payments remained the largest category globally, accounting for 115 companies or 23% of the list. Wealth technology followed with 75 companies (15%), while enterprise fintech and alternative financing each represented 12%. Digital assets and regtech were the smallest segments at 8% each. The United States led with 42% of recognised companies, followed by the United Kingdom at 13%, India at 27 companies (third place), and Singapore at 25 companies. By city, London topped the list with 64 companies (13%), followed by New York with 50 companies and San Francisco.
Cross-border settlement titans Thunes and OpenPayd earned top placements in the payments and enterprise fintech categories respectively. Thunes, recognised for the second consecutive year, was featured in the payments category for its role as a global leader in payments interoperability. Its Direct Global Network connects to endpoints spanning 140 countries, 90 fiat currencies, and 12 billion bank accounts, mobile wallets, and stablecoin wallets. OpenPayd was recognised in the Enterprise Fintech category for building universal financial infrastructure for the digital economy. Through a single API, its rails-agnostic platform enables more than 1,200 businesses to move and manage money globally across traditional finance and digital assets, processing more than $280 billion in annualised payment volume.
The global fintech industry generated $650 billion in revenue in 2025, up 21% from the previous year—well ahead of the broader financial services industry's 6% growth. Publicly listed fintech firms now command a record cumulative market capitalisation of $850 billion, while the sector witnessed 31 notable IPOs in 2025. International money transfers are becoming instant and interoperable. By linking local real-time payment rails, mobile wallets, and digital asset networks through single API channels, small merchants and mid-market enterprises can settle cross-border supplier invoices instantly across 140+ countries. As CNBC noted, the fintech industry is entering a new phase where scale, profitability and regulatory compliance are becoming increasingly important, while artificial intelligence is transforming how financial transactions are monitored, verified and processed.
