 Farnborough 2026 Showcases Tactical Air Defense & Unmanned Systems
Major developments emerged from the Farnborough International Airshow 2026, held from July 20-24, as global defense manufacturers and sovereign nations showcased next-generation unmanned systems, loitering munitions, and indigenous missile technologies. Ukrainian defense builders unveiled an upgraded Liutyi drone equipped with four strike missiles, while European defense ministries expanded procurements of AeroVironment's Switchblade loitering munitions. Simultaneously, India successfully conducted the maiden flight test of its 'Kusha' long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system and debuted a new domestically produced expendable turbojet engine.

Ukrainian Defence Industry (UDI), the country's state arms manufacturer also known as Ukroboronprom, unveiled its Liutyi fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with four missiles on wing-mounted hard points at the airshow. The Liutyi configuration with the missiles is referenced by UDI as a tactical unmanned combat aerial system. Each missile, which a UDI representative declined to name, carries an explosive warhead of around 20 kg. UDI technical specifications describe the Liutyi UAV as having a total payload of 50-150 kg. A UDI representative explained the drone's tactical versatility: "It can be used to strike an airfield with planes when you need several small hits. Another option is to use it in decoy mode. You put this drone in loitering mode near the Russian border and when you have resources for an attack just fire these missiles and Russians will see them on their radar". The representative stressed that Russian reports of Ukraine sending "a barrage of 300 drones" typically means at least 50 are decoy UAVs used in the attack.

European countries are procuring AeroVironment Switchblade loitering munitions (LMs) via the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. An AeroVironment representative told Janes that Greece had procured Switchblade 600 (SB600) and the UK Switchblade 300 (SB300) LMs. The US State Department announced on July 16, 2026, that it had approved the possible FMS to Greece of Switchblade 300 Block 20 Lethal Miniature Aerial Missile Systems, with the Greek government requesting to purchase 350 systems and 35 fire control systems at an estimated total cost of $80.1 million. The State Department said the proposed sale would "improve Greece's capability to deter current and future threats, support coalition operations, and increase interoperability with the United States".

India achieved two significant defense milestones coinciding with the airshow. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the indigenously developed 'Kusha' Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LR-SAM) system from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast on July 23. The missile was tested against an electronic target simulating a high-speed, high-altitude aerial threat, which was successfully intercepted. The Kusha system is designed to counter a wide spectrum of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and large enemy aircraft, across a broad range of altitudes and engagement distances. The missile system is capable of engaging threats across the 150-350 km range band and is expected to be deployed in three to four years. It is being developed in three variants: M1 (150 km), M2 (250 km), and M3 (350 km). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the successful test as a significant milestone, noting that the development of a long-range surface-to-air missile system—a capability possessed by only a limited number of countries—would mark a major advancement in India's air defence preparedness and reduce import dependency.

India also developed its first indigenous Expendable Turbojet Engine in the 350 kg thrust class, developed by DRDO's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE). The engine was manufactured and assembled by Hyderabad-based Azad Engineering and delivered to GTRE on July 22, 2026. The Ministry of Defence said the development of such a complex system based on DRDO's design reflects the growing technological capabilities of the Indian defence industry and marks the culmination of years of precision engineering, advanced manufacturing, and close collaboration. The engine has been specifically optimised to power long-range cruise missiles, loitering munitions, and one-way attack drones.

The era of slow-moving defense procurement is ending. The era of integrated, combat-tested unmanned systems and sovereign missile defense infrastructure is already here.
