World Money: WhatsApp Plus Arrives as Meta's First Consumer Subscription
Meta has officially launched WhatsApp Plus, marking the messaging platform's first paid subscription service for everyday consumers. The move represents a significant shift for the world's most popular messaging app, which has remained entirely free since its founding. The optional subscription focuses exclusively on personalization and visual customization, keeping all core messaging, calling, and privacy features free for everyone.

The Latest News

WhatsApp Plus rolled out to users across multiple markets throughout June, with India receiving widespread availability at ₹79 per month. In Indonesia, the service costs Rp 13,900 per month, while in Pakistan it is priced at PKR 229 and in Europe at €2.49. The service is available to both Android and iPhone users.

Features and Customization

The subscription unlocks a suite of cosmetic upgrades designed to make the app feel more personal. Subscribers gain access to 18 exclusive color themes, including Vibrant Blue, Royal Purple, Forest Green, Fuchsia Pink, Deep Navy, Coral Orange, and Golden Yellow. Users can also choose from 14 premium app icons to replace WhatsApp's traditional green logo with alternative designs ranging from minimalist black-and-white to artistic versions.

Beyond visual changes, WhatsApp Plus includes 10 exclusive notification sounds and ringtones with names such as Flutter, Ripple, Meadow, Bubble, and Carnival. Subscribers also receive access to exclusive sticker packs with special animated effects.

Practical Upgrades

One of the most practical additions is the increased pinned chat limit. While regular WhatsApp users can pin only three conversations, WhatsApp Plus allows subscribers to pin up to 20 chats at the top of their chat list. The subscription also offers advanced chat list organization, letting users apply the same theme, ringtone, and notification settings to entire groups of chats at once.

What Remains Free

Meta has been explicit that WhatsApp Plus does not affect any core functionality. End-to-end encrypted messaging, voice and video calling, Channels, Status updates, file sharing, and all existing privacy and security protections remain completely free. Users who choose not to subscribe will continue to enjoy the same messaging experience without losing access to any features. The subscription is not available for WhatsApp Business accounts.

How to Subscribe

Eligible users can subscribe by opening WhatsApp, navigating to Settings, tapping Subscriptions, selecting WhatsApp Plus, and completing payment through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. New subscribers receive a one-month free trial before the monthly charge begins. The subscription renews automatically unless canceled. The rollout may take time to reach all accounts.

The Bottom Line

July 2026 marks WhatsApp's entry into the paid subscription space, joining Instagram and Facebook in Meta's broader strategy to diversify revenue across its family of apps. WhatsApp Plus is purely about personalization, not unlocking new communication capabilities. For users who spend significant time on the app and enjoy customizing their digital experience, the monthly fee may be worthwhile. For those satisfied with the standard experience, the core messaging service remains completely free. The question now is whether this cosmetic-only subscription can drive meaningful adoption, or if users will remain content with the familiar green interface they have known for years.
