Artificial intelligence is undergoing a major spending transformation as enterprise buyers move from generic experimentation to cost transparency, latency management, and domain-specific performance. Gartner published its latest global forecast today, projecting worldwide end-user spending on AI platforms and models to reach $64.2 billion in 2026—a massive 63.4% surge from $39 billion in 2025. Spending on generative AI models is forecast to grow 117%, while AI platform spending will rise 36.9%.
The Latest News
Enterprise AI budgets are coming under greater scrutiny, according to Gartner, with companies paying increased attention to usage efficiency, cost control, and measurable business outcomes. “Spending is shifting toward providers who can demonstrate clear value across cost, latency, performance and reliability,” said Arunasree Cheparthi, Senior Principal Research Analyst at Gartner. “This is giving an edge to providers that embed evaluation, cost transparency and usage tracking into customer workflows, making it easier to manage and optimize AI use”.
This dynamic is accelerating growth in domain-specific language models (DSLMs) and specialized GenAI models, which are forecast to grow 210% in 2026. Foundation Generative AI Models spending will increase from $11.4 billion in 2025 to $23.4 billion in 2026—a growth of 104.2%. Meanwhile, spending on DSLMs and Specialized GenAI Models is expected to rise from $1.6 billion to $4.9 billion, marking the fastest-growing segment. AI Application Development Platforms will grow from $6.9 billion to $9.5 billion, while AI Platforms for Data Science and Machine Learning will expand from $19.4 billion to $26.4 billion. “Over the long-term, the biggest winners will be vendors that help enterprises manage where and how AI is used across the business,” Cheparthi added. “As more models enter the market and usage-based pricing becomes harder to predict, buyers will turn to platforms that help them choose the right tools, monitor performance, enforce policy and keep costs under control”.
Ethical AI Standard
Simultaneously, UNESCO and LG AI Research formally launched Empowering Minds: Transforming Lives—a free global massive open online course (MOOC) on the ethics of AI, hosted on Coursera. The course was launched at the Ethics by Design: Industry and Innovation Conference held at the Korean National Commission for UNESCO premises in Seoul. Grounded in the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, adopted unanimously by UNESCO’s 193 Member States in 2021, the course marks a shift in translating UNESCO's ethical principles into practical knowledge and skills for those developing, deploying, and governing AI systems. Designed for technologists, researchers, policymakers, students, and any professional whose work touches AI, the 10-module course introduces learners to the core principles of the UNESCO Recommendation and equips them to apply an ethics-by-design approach in the systems they build, deploy, or regulate. The curriculum has been shaped by global AI experts from leading institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford University's McCoy Ethics Center, Harvard University, Oxford Internet Institute, and the Technical University of Munich. Coursera has joined as a partner, opening the course to learners worldwide.
Daily Routine Impact
AI platforms are becoming tighter and more accountable. In daily workflows, corporate teams are deploying automated usage-tracking dashboards to monitor model API costs, optimize query latency, and route tasks to localized, specialized models rather than relying on expensive multi-purpose cloud LLMs. Gartner's forecast confirms that as enterprises shift from generic experimentation to cost-conscious, domain-specific deployment, the AI market is entering a new phase where value, transparency, and efficiency matter as much as raw capability.
The Bottom Line
July 2026 marks a decisive shift in enterprise AI spending. The $64.2 billion market—up 63.4% from 2025—is being reshaped by the explosive 210% growth of domain-specific language models and the 117% surge in generative AI spending. UNESCO's free global AI ethics MOOC, launched with LG AI Research, ensures that as spending scales, so does the practical framework for responsible development. The era of unchecked AI experimentation is ending. The era of cost-conscious, domain-specific, and ethically-grounded AI deployment is already here.
