xAI Drops Grok 4.5 in Private Beta at Tesla & Spac

Artificial intelligence labs are leveraging internal industrial ecosystems to stress-test frontier models on complex engineering tasks rather than standard public benchmarks.

On June 28, Elon Musk announced that xAI's newest large language model, Grok 4.5, has entered private beta testing exclusively within SpaceX and Tesla. The architecture represents a massive leap forward, built on a 1.5-trillion parameter V9 foundation model—making it roughly three times larger than the current production model running on X. Musk framed the deployment as an "internal proving ground" before any wider public release.

To hyper-optimize its technical capabilities, the model was trained using Supplemental Session Data from Cursor—the popular AI coding platform whose parent company, Anysphere, SpaceX agreed to acquire for $60 billion in an all-stock deal on June 16. The supplemental Cursor data used to train V9 came from real developer workflows, multi-file edits, refactors, and iterative correction cycles—positioned by xAI as a way to sharpen the model's coding performance.

Early internal engineering reviews indicate that Grok 4.5's coding and logic capabilities rival or exceed top-tier competitive models. Musk stated that early evaluations show the model performing "close to, perhaps exceeding" Anthropic's flagship Claude Opus. Reinforcement learning is continuing to improve the model, and xAI's "Grok Build" coding-agent harness is being refined daily.

The Cursor acquisition is central to xAI's strategy. SpaceX had been eyeing Cursor for months and in April unveiled an option to either buy the startup for $60 billion or pay $10 billion for a partnership. The deal provides SpaceX with a sizable developer customer base and valuable training data. SpaceX touted its collaboration with Cursor in its IPO prospectus, calling it "a compelling extension of our strategy to vertically integrate compute infrastructure, models, and applications".

The timing is significant. xAI's V9-Medium model—the 1.5 trillion parameter, Cursor-trained system—was first announced by Musk in late May, with some reports speculating it would ship as "Grok 5" while others expected it to land as an interim 4.x release. Musk also revealed that SpaceX will ship a completely new model, trained from scratch, every month for the rest of the year.

July 2026 marks a pivotal moment for xAI's ambitions. Grok 4.5's private beta deployment at SpaceX and Tesla represents a unique approach to AI development—stress-testing frontier models within Musk's industrial ecosystem before public release.
